Does Mental Training Help Lower Golf Scores?

Does Mental Training Work?

My obvious answer is YES. This is why I update the website. I have been applying simple mental training techniques to my game and I now carry a lower handicap than back in high school when I played almost every day. Back then I practiced for hours each week but had little to no mental guidance. Today I rely on better thinking to make up for the lack of practice time. Life is busier now than it was. Many of you are in the same spot.

The training has worked for me…does it work for anyone else?

The answer again is YES.

My dad decided to make a new commitment to his golf game this summer with a focus on his brain. He also doesn’t have a ton of time to hit balls and practice. Instead, he’s worked very hard on changing his mindset before, during and after the round.

And the results…he has shot lower scores this year than in the past 10! It’s been awesome to watch. And the scores haven’t just been a little better, they’ve been drastic. He fired a 77 last week and a 78 two weeks prior. My dad is in his mid 50s now and I can’t remember the last time he posted such  good scores. He’s managing the course better. He’s managing his expectations better. He’s managing his attitude more effectively. His decision making has improved, his thought processes have improved and as a result, his scores have improved.

The beauty of mental training is that you don’t have to be at the course. You can work on your mind any time, any where. Your brain is always with you. Simple techniques can make drastic changes when applied consistently. Please read some of my prior posts for great ideas you can immediately use. Changing a philosophy or thought pattern doesn’t happen over night so go to work today. Start becoming the player you know you can be.

  • Mike,

Your inspiration and leadership skills have been evident since I met you (a vibrant 6 year old boy at the time).
As I’ve had the privilege of watching you grow and embrace lifes lessons,I am sure of one thing… you were made to share them. You have the gift to communicate the wealth and richness of our God-given potential to those of us who lose our positive focus.
I don’t golf. But I live daily on the same “course” of lifes challenges.

    Here’s to the best score!

    Love as always,

    Janet Lysko
